WhatsApp is preparing for one of the biggest transformations in its history. Beginning in mid‑2026, the messaging service will no longer require a phone number to create an account. Instead, users will be able to communicate through unique usernames — a shift that fundamentally changes how the platform works.
Messaging Without a Phone Number
Until now, a mobile number was essential for contacting someone on WhatsApp. Soon, a personal username will be enough to send messages or start voice and video calls. Phone numbers will remain hidden by default, offering an additional layer of privacy.
The change is optional. Anyone who prefers the traditional phone‑number system can continue using it.
New Parent‑Managed Accounts for Children
WhatsApp is also introducing accounts specifically designed for children aged 10 to 12. These profiles are fully managed by parents or legal guardians, who can:
- Approve who may contact their child
- Control which groups the child can join
- Review message requests from unknown contacts
- Adjust privacy and safety settings
Setup requires linking the parent’s device with the child’s. Access to the controls is protected by a parent PIN, and only parents can make changes. Despite the added oversight, all personal messages remain end‑to‑end encrypted.
Official WhatsApp App for Garmin Smartwatches
Another major addition is the launch of an official WhatsApp app for Garmin smartwatches. Users will be able to read and reply to messages directly from their wrist, provided their smartphone stays within Bluetooth range.
Replies can be sent using:
- Prewritten quick responses
- Emojis
- The watch’s built‑in keyboard
The feature will roll out across several Garmin models.
More Features in Development
WhatsApp is also testing a range of new tools and improvements:
Guest Chats
A new “guest chat” option will allow people to join conversations via a link — even without a WhatsApp account. These browser‑based chats are end‑to‑end encrypted, support text messages only, and automatically expire after ten days of inactivity.
Improved Call Quality
A built‑in noise‑suppression feature will reduce background sounds such as traffic or wind. It will be enabled by default but can be turned off.
Logout Without Losing Chat History
WhatsApp is planning a new logout function that preserves chat history, making it easier to switch devices.
Automatic Translations
Messages will soon be translated automatically into up to 21 languages, without requiring manual selection.
Enhanced Disappearing Messages
A new option will delete messages 15 minutes after they are read — or after 24 hours if they remain unread.
